About Inpainting

We all know this situation: after making a great picture you find out that something is just not right. You have photographed your own shadow, someone partly walked into the scene or that otherwise very nice portrait photo is ruined by a small but prominently visible pimple.

There is always the possibility to retake the photo, but often the moment has passed by or you notice the imperfection much later. We felt this was a real shame and a waste of otherwise perfect pictures. Because of this we set out to develop the technology that can actually fix this for you.

The process of restoring a part of an image with information of the remaining image is generally called “inpainting“. Our approach combines different complex image processing techniques and we feel that the results of the first version are quite remarkable!

The first tool that will use Cannibal’s inpainting technology is called Hom3decorator. This web application allows the user to take a picture of their living room and turn this into its interactive 3D counterpart. This allows the user placing virtual furniture pieces and check out different redecorations.

Our inpainting technology will be used for the tool to create a empty room without the need to actually remove everything. Although inpainting is not available in the current version of Hom3decorator just yet, it is absolutely worth to check out the tool here.
